The standard final episode of The Sopranos—with its abrupt cut to black in Holsten’s diner—remains one of the most debated moments in television history. While David Chase opted for existential ambiguity, he missed a massive opportunity for a definitive, high-stakes conclusion.

Here is why David Chase should have made The Sopranos Season 7 about the public trial of Tony Soprano, ending with a dark, poetic mirroring of the show's iconic opening credits.

The Ultimate Reality Check: A Public Reckoning
For six seasons, Tony Soprano successfully compartmentalised his life. He was a loving family man in the leafy suburbs of North Caldwell, and a ruthless mob boss in the backrooms of the Bada Bing. A seventh season centred around a federal Rico trial would have violently smashed these two worlds together.
By forcing Tony into a federal courtroom, the show would have stripped away the glamorous mystique of the mafia. The audience, alongside the characters, would be subjected to the cold, hard evidence of Tony’s brutal legacy:
  • The Wiretaps: Hearing Tony's own voice casually ordering executions.
  • The Turning of Closest Friends: Former allies taking the stand to save themselves.
  • The Raw Brutality: Seeing the financial extortion and physical violence laid bare in public records.
The Family in the Gallery: Facing the Truth
The true dramatic engine of Season 7 would not be the legal maneuvering, but the psychological destruction of the Soprano family. Placing Carmela, Meadow, and AJ in the courtroom gallery every single day would have forced a final, agonizing confrontation with reality.

Why This Ending Beats the Cut to Black
While Chase’s actual ending captured the constant paranoia of a mobster's life, a trial season would have provided the ultimate narrative satisfaction. It would have delivered a profound moral message: no one escapes the consequences of their actions. By turning the iconic drive home from the opening credits into a final, permanent journey to a prison cell, The Sopranos would have delivered the most poetically perfect closing circle in television history.
